For the first time in event history, the paddle 'round the pier was 'postponed' til next year because of big waves. There were 8-10+ faces on the sets and some waves were brushing up against the bottom of the pier. At the recommendation of the lifeguards we did not host the group paddle and it turned into the 'surf for clean water' with some of the locals and visitors alike putting on a show.
The festival and awareness event went on. We talked to hundreds of people about border pollution issues in South Bay San Diego County and hosted eco-friendly vendors that had a green impact on the day. The highlights of the day were the afternoon music sets. The bands really ripped it up on the Sustainable Waves solar stage.
Many thanks to the event sponsors one more time: Clif Bar, Gro Solar, Vivix 659 clothing, Stone Brewing Co., Cali Bamboo and 91X. And many thanks to the volunteers, we could not do it without you!
The 17th annual Paddle for Clean Water rallied hundreds of San Diego ocean lovers to paddle around the Ocean Beach Pier and demand clean water. This year was the second with a festival event that included live music, local artists, food and more. The Silent Comedy, One Drop, The Professors and Shaka Buku all played great music sets.
Local news estimated over 1500 people attended the event which generated great awareness for the federal toll road hearing and SurfriderSD’s newest campaign, Know Your H20. Surfrider would like to thank Clif Bar for being the title sponsor along with Stone Brewing Co. and Holeman Surf designs for their support. Many thanks to all of the volunteers that helped to plan and staff the event as well as everyone that turned out on Sunday - we could not have done it without your support!
